This is Furat Younes, a 2-year-old boy from Qalqilya, Palestine that suffers from severe hearing loss and is on the priority list for a cochlear implant surgery at The Bethlehem Arab Society for Rehabilitation, but his family cannot afford this surgery. What is a Cochlear Implant? A cochlear implant is a small electronic device that helps to restore hearing in patients with severe hearing loss. Hearing aids amplify sound coming into the ear, but a cochlear implant is different: It bypasses the ear to deliver sounds to the auditory nerve. Cochlear implants contain four parts: Microphone, Speech processor, Transmitter/ Receiver & Electrodes. As your brain receives the signals through the auditory nerve, it translates them into the sound you hear. When you have a cochlear implant, the sounds won’t be like normal sounds. However, it only takes time and training from the team at Specialty Physician Associates to teach you how to interpret the sounds. How Cochlear Implant will change Furat’s future? Once Furat receives a cochlear implant, he will become better able to recognize speech which will vastly improve his social interactions and self-esteem. A Cochlear Implant will provide Furat with a brighter and more prosperous future. I pray that God may be stirring your heart as He has ours.
